ASA/KELLOGS Competitive Swimmer Awards

What is it and how does it work?

The Amateur Swimming Association is the national governing body for swimming. Its award scheme, sponsored by Kellogg’s, is designed to motivate and reward the achievements of swimmers at any age or level. Through the scheme swimmers can collect badges and certificates when they have successfully achieved the required standard in terms of developing new techniques, achieving times or distances. WNSC supports 3 of the schemes by selling the relevant badges and certificates on behalf of the ASA. Swimmers are encouraged to display their badges on their Club polo shirt

Competitive Swimmer Award:

These awards can be achieved in competition or organised time trials held at the Club and recognise the time achieved. Award times are consistent with the ASA Graded Swimming Times. Gold Standard is approximate to average county age group qualifying times for 12 year old boys. When this level is reached, there is a good chance that these swimmers would qualify at county level.

There are 3 types of award which relate to the length of the swim:

1.   Sprint: Distances up to 100m. for all strokes including Individual Medley (IM)

2.   Middle Distance: 200m. for all strokes including IM and 400m front crawl

3.   Distance: 400m IM and 800m and 1500m front crawl

Times are graded at 4 levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with a separate award for each stroke. Once the swimmer achieves a time at that level for any stroke, they can claim the round badge which relates to the distance (i.e. Sprint, Middle, Distance) and the relevant stroke flash and then collect further flashes as times are achieved for each stroke at that distance.

FRONT CRAWL                   BACKSTROKE                        BREASTSTROKE               BUTTERFLY                        INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY

The ASA times for the most popular distances are shown overleaf – they are also posted on the Club notice-board. For the full list of times see the ASA website. To claim an award you will need an official time recorded in the Club’s rankings gained either at a competition (Gala or Open Meet) or time trial.

Distance Badges

The Club is not participating in the distance awards part of the scheme.

CompetitiveStarts:

Awarded when the swimmer has demonstrated the required competency to undertake a racing dive in shallow water (water depth range 0.9m up to 1.3m) from the side of the pool or a starting block. Once achieved, swimmers are permitted dive in at either end of the pool – important in a relay event in competitions.  Coaches will periodically run a special coaching session at the end of which they will assess the swimmers. This not only allows the swimmer to claim their award but also helps the Coach with team selection for galas. No swimmer at WNSC is allowed to dive into the water at the shallow end until they have been assessed by the Coach and have passed the required standard.

Getting hold of the badges:

  1. Competitive Starts: Once you have taken part in the required session a list will be forwarded to the award shop confirming that you are eligible for the competitive start badge and certificate. This list will be available on both notice boards.
  2. Competitive Swimmer: You will need an official PB (personal best) to claim this award. As long as the time is recorded in the Club’s ranking and is after 1st September 2012, you are entitled to the award.

The Competitive Award Shop will be open at Downham Market pool viewing area on Sundays 530pm to 7pm and at St James pool viewing area on Tuesdays 430pm to 545pm.

If you are a swimmer from District, National Junior or National squads and would like to purchase your awards please see Nikki Warnes.

Please collect your order form, fill it in and return it with payment to the Award Shop. Your order will be available for collection the following week.

You can email Nikki at swimawards@westnorfolksc.co.uk

During home open meets the award shop will be open for you to collect your awards once the results have been published.

Prices for the awards are shown below. The ASA invests all profits from the schemes back into the sport. West Norfolk Swimming Club makes a very small profit from the sale of each badge – again this helps bolster club funds to keep your fees at the lowest possible level.
